NSW govt seeks to boost digital transactions

Additional funding for Service NSW

The New South Wales budget includes new funding to increase the number of government agency transactions that are offered through Service NSW. The budget, handed down today, includes $31.8 million in 2016-17 for building digital capability and the transition of agency transactions to the ‘one-stop shop’ for government services.

In total the budget earmarks $415 million for the agency ($329 million recurrent and $86 million capital).

In 2016-17, Service NSW is forecast to increase the digital transactions it offers from 43 per cent to 49 per cent of transactions and offer 880 discrete transaction services.

In September the state government said it aimed to have 70 per cent of government transactions conducted via digital channels by 2019 as one of 12 ‘Premier’s Priorities’.

Service NSW funding allocated for 2016-17 also includes $12.3 million for the state’s digital licence program, $6.8 million for technology upgrades to help scale up the agency’s work, $6.3 million for digital channel enhancements, $18.2 million for service centres and technology related assets, $3.3 million for customer service platforms, and $7.7 million for the Easy To Do Business program.

“This budget shows the NSW government is committed to making smarter use of taxpayer resources, while investing jobs, growth and the best quality services for the people of NSW,” minister for finance, services and property Dominic Perrottet said in a statement.

“It is a budget that puts citizens and businesses front and centre, investing in the customer-focused services and technology tools that make NSW the leading state for digital innovation.”

The budget also includes $241 million in 2016-17 for shared services including ICT, $69 million to drive “whole of government strategies to achieve better value service delivery from ICT across government”, and $17 million over four years to fund the state government’s Data Analytics Centre.

The state government earlier this year unveiled its new single customer account for accessing state government services, dubbed MyServiceNSW and rolled out a new payments platform for Service NSW.
