Optus Business strikes $20m Wi-Fi deal

Telco to deliver Wi-Fi to 81 shopping centres

Optus Business will roll out Wi-Fi to 81 shopping centres and six corporate sites under a $20 million deal struck with Vicinity Centres.

The five-year agreement will see Optus roll out free Wi-Fi services for shoppers in Vicinity’s portfolio of retail centres.

Optus said that the Wi-Fi services will include personalised content and location-based information, and open up opportunities for potential beacon-based services by retailers in the centres.

The telco announced in March that it had implemented Wi-Fi for Mirvac’s Shopping Centre in Sydney and Orion Springfield Central in Brisbane.

In early 2015 Optus said it had struck a deal with Scentre Group to deliver Wi-Fi services across 21 Westfield shopping centres.

For its first quarter, Optus reported EBITDA of $67 million on operating revenue of $381 million for its enterprise group (down 9.3 per cent and 1.8 per cent, respectively, on the prior corresponding period).

Overall the telco registered an 11.9 per cent decline in its first quarter profit. The telco reported a Q1 net profit of $173 million, down from $196 million in the prior corresponding period.
