Telstra will boost its communications technicians workforce by 1000 over the next six months, the telco said today.

Telstra said the technicians would include a number of full-time employees as well as subcontractors sourced through Infrastructure Services Group Management. Telstra last year signed a 10-year deal with ISGM.

Telstra said it already had 600 communications technicians in training, with an additional 140 moved into the field.

“Connectivity is now absolutely central in so many homes and businesses and our customers expect us to install new services and fix faults as quickly as possible,” Telstra executive director customer service delivery, Brian Harcourt, said in a statement.

“We know that sometimes the experience our customers can have when they need a fault fixed or a new service installed can improve and we are building up our resources to do just that.

“Increasing the number of CTs that perform these tasks will have the dual benefit of enabling us to get through more work and freeing up our more experienced technicians to deal with more complex tasks.”

Telstra’s announcement follows a number of rounds of redundancies at the telco this year, including for members of its fibre installation design team and a proposed round of redundancies for members of its Networks Delivery team.
