Optus expands cyber offering with Palo Alto Networks

Telco continues to grow its security services

Optus Business is collaborating with Palo Alto Networks to expand its managed security services offering.

The telco’s Managed Advanced Threat Prevention services will comprise of firewall, cloud and endpoint security, and operate on Palo Alto’s Next Generation Security Platform.

“Our collaboration with Palo Alto Networks is another example of Optus Business’ ongoing investment in growing Australia’s ability to combat the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyber security threats,” John Paitaridis, managing director of Optus Business, said in a statement.

“Our enhanced managed security services are complemented by Palo Alto Networks innovative technologies and support Australian businesses and government agencies with services they need to operate confidently in the digital and global market,” he added.

Customers of the service will receive help to “assess, design, implement and manage” their security environment, Optus Business said.

Cyber security is an important part of the telco’s enterprise strategy and Optus’ parent company Singtel has entered into a number of partnerships with cyber players in the last year including Palo Alto Networks, Akamai and FireEye. Singtel opened its Advanced Security Operations Centre in Sydney at the beginning of last year.

Bill Chang, Chief Executive Officer, Group Enterprise at Singtel told Computerworld Singapore that companies worldwide faced a lack of cyber preparedness and a shortage of skills.

“This is why we've stepped up to the plate. We know we have to help companies secure themselves against a potential slew of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks,” Chang said.

In May, Optus Business launched a ‘cyber security hub’ in partnership with Macquarie University to offer consultancy services, degree programs and short professional courses.

“We’re very focused on being a leading managed cyber security organisation in this country,” Paitaridis said at the time, adding that the telco was “uniquely placed” to offer its customers cyber services and consultancy on top of its suite of enterprise communication solutions.
