Vodafone offers customers extra data after outage

2GB of free data for customers as telco apologises

Vodafone’s customers will receive extra data following a significant network outage over the weekend.

The telco said yesterday that a problem with a router disrupted 4G services on its mobile network on Sunday evening. When customers automatically downgraded to 3G and 2G services, congestion overwhelmed the network causing problems for some customers when they sought to use voice, data and text services.

The telco announced this morning that both prepaid and postpaid customers will be eligible for 2GB of extra data. Rival telco Telstra offered unlimited free data to its customers following a number of network outages.

“While not all customers experienced service disruption, all postpaid customers and prepaid customers who top-up within a month, will receive an additional 2GB of data,” a statement from the telco said.

“We apologise sincerely for this disruption and we hope the 2GB of bonus data will allow customers to enjoy more of the Vodafone network.”

Postpaid customers will receive the data in their October or November billing cycle. Prepaid customers who recharge after a date to be advised in October (and within a month of that date) will receive the extra data.

During the outage some customers took to social media with the ‘#Vodafail’ hashtag, first popularised in late 2010 when customers on the telco’s network experienced a range of performance problems.

Since then Vodafone has invested heavily in its mobile network. Recent Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman figures revealed Vodafone had the lowest number of complaints per 10,000 services in operation out of Australia’s three big telcos.

Rival Telstra has this year been hit with a number of high-profile outages. The telco has pledged to spend millions boosting network resilience.
