Telcos grapple with storm aftermath in South Australia

Vodafone, Telstra and Optus work to restore services

Telcos have moved to restore services in South Australia the wake of the massive storm that hit the state yesterday.

All three major telcos reported impact on their infrastructure from the storm, which took out power across the state.

Vodafone says that its mobile services are back up and running across most of South Australia.

“We were able to safely restore hundreds of sites last night following the state-wide power outage caused by severe storms in South Australia,” a spokesperson for the telco said.

“However there is still some disruption to services due to safety reasons or continued power outages at several dozen sites,” the spokesperson said. Vodafone said it would work today to assess any damage and restore further mobile sites as soon as possible.

Optus said that some customers may experience problems with voice or data services due to damage to mobile base stations and other infrastructure.

A spokesperson said that that the telco’s engineers continued to monitor the network in order to minimise the impact from the storm.

“Optus is progressively restoring services as power is being restored across the state,” a spokesperson said. “We are working closely with the relevant authorities to restore services as a priority. Where possible, we are attempting to deploy back-up generators in response to power outages.”

There is currently no Optus mobile service available in Port Lincoln, Port Pirie and the majority of areas across the Eyre Peninsula.

The telco’s NBN services have not been affected, and other broadband services and fixed voice services have largely been restored.

A Telstra spokesperson said that some customers may be experiencing problems with their services.

“Our techs have worked through the night to restore fixed line services in Henley Beach and Wallaroo and deploy backup generators to key locations where possible,” a spokesperson said.

“We continue to work with the network provider and emergency services.

“Any impacted customers should see their Telstra services begin to return as power is restored.”
