Exetel takes on UK market

Independent ISP expands overseas

Exetel has begun offering services in the UK, the Australian Internet service provider has announced.

It is the first time the ISP has offered services outside of the Australian market.

The company says it is initially focusing on business customers, particularly SMEs, delivering VoIP and data services through a partnership with wholesaler Virtual1.

“Expansion into the UK is an exciting step for Exetel,” said the ISP’s CEO, Richard Purdy.

“We are familiar with the market and have seen an opportunity there that we are excited to capitalise on; now is the ideal time for us to do so.”

Exetel was founded in 2001 by the late John Linton.

Purdy was appointed CEO in April 2013. In 2014, the CEO began rolling out a new strategy for the ISP: Exetel originally built its reputation as a discount ISP through word of mouth, but the company began to invest in digital, outdoor and brand awareness advertising.

“Having shaken up the Australian telco market over the past 12 years we are excited to be expanding into the UK, which has always been a key part of our growth plan,” Purdy said.

“We see a considerable gap in the market where small businesses are not supported, and we have the know-how and the flexibility to fill this. We look forward to replicating the success that we have achieved in Australia in the UK market.”
