Startup Nubeva pitches Security as a Service in the cloud

Former Panzura and Aruba execs have self-funded this San Jose-based company

A team made up of executives from Aruba Networks and Panzura are out with a new self-funded startup this week that aims to deploy security tools that enterprises use in their campus and extend it to the cloud.

The idea of Nubeva is to create a Security as a Service platform that takes existing security tools and controls that organizations use in their data centers and other on premises infrastructure and mirror that same stack of security tools in the public cloud. Nubeva has created a platform that automates the deployment of those security resources in the public cloud.

Randy Chou is the man behind San Jose-based Nubeva; he’s a former co-founder and CEO of cloud storage company Panzura. Nubeva’s other co-founder is Greg Bannister, who’s worked with Chou at both Panzura and Aruba Networks.

Chou says enterprises spend about $86 billion on securing IT resources in large offices. Less than $2 billion is spent on securing remote and branch workers and offices.

Nubeva has created a platform named CloudEdge that scans an organization's security profile to determine which products are used. Then, it deploys those in a public cloud like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure or Google cloud. The idea is that public cloud resources that are used by an organization will be secured with the same tools the company uses in their on-premises environment.

Nubeva can launch security tools from Palo Alto Networks, Cisco and many others. Typical security services deployed into the cloud include next-generation virtual firewalls, advanced threat protection, anti-malware, data loss prevention and others, Chou says.

Other vendors like Cato Networks and ZScaler offer similar services for replicating security tools into the public cloud, but Chou says the difference with Nubeva is that customers are able to use their best of breed range of security tools that they use on premises, and replicate them in the public cloud. Customers are able to deploy security tools from their vendors in the public cloud, but a company like Nubeva will act as an integrator of all security tools in use, easing the process and ensuring their proper use.

The company is launching out of stealth today and the product is available for proof of concept testing. Nubeva prices the platform at about $5 per user per month with one to three year license.
