Problems hit MyTax users trying to meet tax return deadline

No penalties for people who lodge today, ATO says

A spokesperson for the Australian Taxation Office has acknowledged that some people experienced “slowness” yesterday when attempting to file their tax returns using the ATO’s online service.

“Everything appears to be working now so we are encouraging people to try again,” an ATO spokesperson said. The deadline for filing a 2015-16 tax return was yesterday, but the ATO will not penalise people who lodge today after a number of complaints by individuals reporting they were unable to access MyTax.

Last year the MyTax system struggled to match end of financial year demand.

This year, the ATO killed support for lodgement using its E-tax desktop application. Instead, all individuals preparing their own tax return needed to lodge it using the online MyTax application.

In order to avoid a repeat of last year’s problems, the ATO revamped its dev and test processes and boosted processing capacity for MyTax.
