ANZ CIO out as bank brings in new tech chief

Former Dimension Data executive takes newly created tech exec role at ANZ

ANZ’s chief information officer Scott Collary will depart the bank later this month as part of changes to the technology function at the bank.

The bank announced this morning that Gerard Florian had has been appointed group executive technology and will report to CEO Shayne Elliott. He will join the bank on 30 January.

Florian’s recruitment and the departure of Collary follow changes to the bank’s operating model announced in September by Elliott. Those changes included having Collary directly report to the CEO as part of an effort to reinforce technology’s strategic role alongside digital banking.

Florian is a member of ANZ’s International Technology and Digital Business Advisory Panel, which the bank established in 2015 to offer advice to its board on digital business and emerging technologies.

He is the former chief strategy officer of Dimension Data’s global cloud business unit, and a previous CTO and CMO for the Dimension Data’s Australian division.

ANZ’s other top tech executive is Maile Carnegie, who joined the bank earlier in 2016 as head of its digital banking efforts.

“Gerard’s appointment together with the appointment of Maile Carnegie as group executive digital banking earlier this year, highlights the critical importance of technology to transforming ANZ to compete effectively in the digital age,” Elliott said in a statement.

“Increasingly technology is redefining our business and our relationship with customers. Gerard’s leadership skills and his background in technology including cloud computing make him ideally suited to oversee the strategic shift that we need to make.”

Elliott paid tribute to Collary, who has held the CIO role for just under two years: “Scott has made a very strong contribution since he joined us in 2014. He has established great working relationships between technology and our businesses, continued to strengthen reliability and efficiency of ANZ’s systems, and built a cohesive team and culture within technology. I thank him for his service and wish him every success in the future.”
