Vendors Show Range of New Products

BOSTON (02/09/2000) - A variety of vendors announced new software and technologies here this week at the Seybold Publishing 2000 conference. Product news includes:

-- Adobe Systems Inc. and Palm Inc. said they will integrate Adobe PDF (portable document format) technologies and the Palm platform so that Palm users can read electronic books and other documents on their PDAs (personal digital assistants). The companies did not say when the integration will be launched.

-- Hewlett-Packard Co. said that its HP DeskJet 1220C/PS printer will incorporate Adobe PressReady Basics software and Adobe PostScript 3 printing software. The software will allow users to print out and review high-quality color design work early in the creative process, the companies said. The new printer is set to ship in May and is expected to cost less than US$700, HP said.

-- Asanté Technologies Inc. launched the FriendlyNet GX4 Series of gigabit Ethernet-over-copper switches for workgroups using Mac OS, Linux or Windows.

The series is priced at less than $375 per port, the company said. The FriendlyNet 7000 Series also was announced, ranging in price from $849 to $1,499 and shipping now. The company further said that its AsantéFast GigaNic 1000T, a 32-bit/64-bit PCI adapter, priced at $699, will ship in March, while the GigaNic 1064SX network adapter, priced at $995 is shipping now.

-- Banta Integrated Media-Cambridge Inc., a subsidiary of Banta Corp., is demonstrating its XML Gateway, which has been part of its Bmedia system architecture, but is now being released externally to encourage third-party product support, the company said.

-- Bitstream Inc. officially launched MyFonts.com, a Web site that acts as a font showcase. According to Bitstream, the site displays the largest collection of fonts on the Web. Bitstream also released a core set of 13 delta-hinted TrueType screen fonts. Delta hinting fine tunes fonts so they look better on screen, even when the point size is small and the resolution is low, the company said.

-- Canto Software Inc. released new options for its Cumulus 5 product line. The company announced the Cumulus Browser aimed at print and corporate communications professionals. The Browser allows users to make in-house image or document catalogs accessible online for remote customers or prospective customers. Canto also announced the Cumulus Web Publisher, which lets users make digital images accessible via the Web and offers faster image display, file conversions and easier administration. Both products sell for $495.

-- Color Savvy Systems Ltd. launched its WiziWyg Pro hardware and software package that lets users match colors from scan to display to print. Pricing information on the package wasn't provided.

-- Corel Corp. and Macromedia Inc. have signed a licensing deal under which Macromedia Flash technology will be included in Corel Linux and Corel Draw 9.

The flash technology is designed for vector-based Web sites that include motion, sound, interactivity and graphics, the companies said.

Macromedia also introduced its FreeHand 9 design and layout software for cross-media publishing, and said that the product will be out in March.

Customers who have used previous versions can upgrade to FreeHand 9 for $199, while registered users can upgrade for $149. The Macromedia Flash 4 FreeHand Studio product, also announced at the show, will incorporate the FreeHand 9 software and sell for $499. FreeHand 9 as a standalone piece of software is priced at $399. French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Swedish versions are expected to ship within 30 days of the English release.

-- Cygnet Storage Solutions Inc. announced its Cygnet Digital Librarian, using Canto's Cumulus 5 Digital Asset Management Software, FileLink Corp.'s BAM Library Management Software and Cygnet's DVD100 jukebox integrated with two DVD-RAM drives. The new Cygnet integrated product is targeted at graphic artists, publishers and printers who need rewritable storage with fast access to documents. The two-user version of the Cygnet Digital Librarian is priced at $9,970.

The company also announced the id 100 Personal CD Library, which allows users to store, manage and access up to 100 CDs directly from a Mac browser. The product includes two 40x CD-ROM drives, file management software for Macintosh and the ability to upgrade to DVD. It is priced at $3,899 for the Mac or $3,499 for PCs.

-- Imation Corp. is demonstrating its Verifi color technology that the company said give online shoppers a better idea of the actual colors of products, including cosmetics, clothing and home furnishings. Details about which e-commerce sites will use the technology was not provided.

The company also announced its new Color Analyszer software, that lets prepress and print production workers set color performance standards for proofing systems and presses that can then be monitored and adjusted. The software is expected out in the second quarter of this year with pricing starting at $4,700.

-- North Plains Systems Corp. demonstrated its TeleScope.web Digital Asset Management software, a Web-based product that automatically adjusts to the security profile of users. The Java-based software includes drag-and-drop capability. The product is due out in May. Pricing information was not provided.

-- Random Eye Technologies Inc. launched its Random Eye Images software for conceptualizing and creating images. The software is priced at $249.

-- Sprockets.com said it will launch a virtual workspace for marketing communications and graphics. The service will let teams of workers manage, communicate and control resources via the Internet. Anyone with Internet access will be able to go to Sprockets.com and create a project site, inviting team members who can share and send files, collaborate, and create extranets. The company will charge $10 per month per project and transmission fees.
