Veritas improves NetBackup functionality

Hoping to get a leg up in the ongoing battle with Tivoli's Storage Manger product, Veritas Software on Tuesday released a new set of features.

The enhancements, found in NetBackup 4.5 Feature Pack, are aimed to reduce downtime and improve backup and recovery performance, said Brenda Zawatski, a vice president of product marketing at Veritas.

Specifically, the new features better support Microsoft Exchange, improve data recovery, and ease disaster recovery.

According to Zawatski, the improved support for Exchange recognizes when mailboxes change and then only backs up what has changed since the last backup. This, she says, prevents companies from backing up multiple copies of a PowerPoint presentation, for example, as co-workers e-mail it back and forth as they collaborate on it or distribute it to employees. Zawatski explains this is done by noticing if the size, date, or other attributes of a file change.

The pack also permits instant recovery from disk and creates an electronic report that integrates with Veritas' partner, Iron Mountain .

The updates are available immediately and are free to Veritas customers that are currently on a maintenance contract, concluded Zawatski.

New customers can purchase NetBackup and the new features for US$5,000 for Windows and Linux and $10,000 for Unix.
