Marconi boosts VoIP line with access gear

Marconi Corp. PLC is teaming up with IP voice vendor Mediatrix Telecom Inc. to add access devices to its voice-over-IP line.

Marconi will integrate Mediatrix’s access gear and gateways into its service provider IP phone equipment.

The Mediatrix devices include access gear that connects analog phones and faxes to IP phone networks, and gateways that connect digital PBXs to IP networks or connect local IP phone networks to traditional public phone networks.

The Mediatrix devices enable service providers to offer IP phone services to customers that don’t want to convert their phone infrastructure to IP.

Marconi is interested in selling the gear as a package so service providers can offer managed IP services. “Our partnership with Mediatrix will enable us to leverage its IP telephony technology and experience to broaden the applications potential for our scalable IP Service Provider Networks solutions," says Pete Nicholls, Marconi’s vice president of broadband systems product strategy.

The partnership was announced at this week’s CeBIT trade show in Germany.
