MCI talks product strategy

MCI promises new services and capital investments to build up its product portfolio throughout the year.

MCI, formerly WorldCom, says its "Convergence Networking" product strategy, launched at NetWorld+Interop here this week, will focus on a series of new and existing managed offerings that allow users to converge voice and data to reduce access costs and simplify operations.

As expected, MCI introduced its Secure Internet Gateway support, which will allow users to support their VPN over a variety of networks including frame relay, ATM and IP. Users can more easily connect remote sites and business partners to their VPN if customers can choose from a variety of data access technologies, observers say.

The carrier declined to comment on which vendor's gear it is using to support the service. MCI says that information will be available in "a few weeks."

MCI also discussed its MCI Advantage service, which was formerly called WorldCom Connection and was originally launched as IP Communications over two years ago. This managed service allows users to consolidate their traditional enterprise voice traffic over their data networks.

Although the service is not new, MCI may target the offering at a wider array of customers.

MCI also plans to introduce managed offerings in the Web services, Enterprise Content Delivery and Web hosting arenas.

The carrier says there will be several new services introduced this year based on investments MCI is making in managed services. But the carrier declined to comment on those investments at this time.
