HP to announce ISVs for HP-UX on Itanium

Hewlett-Packard Co. on Monday will announce that dozens of additional independent software vendors (ISVs) plan to port their applications to the Itanium version of HP-UX, an HP executive said Friday, in a show of growing support for HP's version of Unix on Intel Corp.'s 64-bit processor.

The ISVs are expected to include big names such as SAP AG, according to Mark Hudson, HP's vice president of marketing for enterprise storage and servers. However, an HP spokeswoman said Friday that the list of ISVs was still being finalized.

The increased ISV support comes as HP readies systems running the next version of Itanium, code named Madison, which will ship in a matter of months, Hudson said.

The HP systems will contain a new version of HP-UX for Itanium, called HP-UX 11i Version 2, and will ship by the summer of 2003, Hudson said. Summer in the U.S. is generally considered to run from June to August.

The new version of HP-UX for Itanium will bring it on par with HP's PA-RISC version of HP-UX, which now contains some workload management capabilities that are not available on the Itanium version, Hudson said.

Though the Itanium product line got off to a slow start, Hudson admitted, it has recently attracted greater attention from ISVs, particularly since April, when Microsoft announced a version of Windows Server 2003 for Itanium, he said.

The improved performance of Itanium 2 has also driven new ISVs to Itanium, said Hudson, who added that this support was crucial to the success of the new platform.

"No matter how good the technology, these ISVs need to be there," he said.
