LGC snares local distie to expand wireless reach

WiComm has struck an agreement with US manufacturer, LGC Wireless, to distribute its products in Australia and New Zealand.

The Sydney-based wireless provider will also look after all sales and marketing activities, support activities and system design and installation if required.

LGC Wireless manufactures systems for distributing mobile phone radio signals inside buildings and public areas such as hospitals and shopping centres. This is done largely because their physical constructions (metal, concrete) can block outside wireless signals, creating deadzones.

These systems are normally purchased by telcos in order to provide the necessary coverage for their mobile phone networks.

Products in LGC's portfolio which address this include the InterReach and MetroReach range.

Asia director of business support for LGC, Derek Paton, said the deal represented the company's first serious push in the local market.

"I have been setting up the business here and now [that] we are getting traction it was time to bring on a local person," he said.

LGC signed up WiComm because it already had dealings with its managing director, Stephen Page, Paton said.

"The coming together of LGC and WiComm was one of timing and past relationships," Page said. "They were chasing some new opportunities in Australia and saw a local presence as enhancing their position."

Although WiComm is a new venture for Page, he has been involved in the wireless industry for two decades. His previous travels have seen him providing wireless solutions to Sydney Olympic venues, Sydney Airport, and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

WiComm also acts as the local agent for Actix, a company which produces specialist software to analyse and report on the performance of mobile phone networks
