Novell proposes directory domain

Looking to raise the profile of directories and promote network directory interoperability, Novell has applied to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to register .dir as a new top-level domain, comparable to .com, .org, and .net. Novell's proposal includes requirements to register a .dir name, including one that the site's directory must be LDAP 2000-certified.

Corel gets Microsoft money, new leader

After announcing a $US135 million investment from Microsoft, software maker Corel announced that Derek Burney has been named as its new leader. Burney, who has been interim chief executive officer and president since the resignation in August of Corel founder and long-time chief executive officer Michael Cowpland, played a key role in the negotiations that led to Microsoft's investment.

Brisbane IT firm offers NFR security toolsAfter forming a partnership with US-based company Network Flight Recorder (NFR), Brisbane-based Bridge Point Communications has become an NFR solutions provider and managed service provider. NFR develops intrusion detection network traffic and network analysis tools. The company's intrusion detection system (IDS) addresses security issues and passively monitors networks, gathers data, analyses it in real time and sends alerts when unexpected events occur.
