Channel.com Briefs: Exodus & Global Centre, CWO, Vignette

Exodus acquires GlobalCenter

Internet hosting provider Exodus Communications has announced its acquisition of GlobalCenter, the Web-hosting component of Global Crossing.

In a deal worth over $US6 billion, the combined entity will have an annual revenue of around $1 billion, with 32 Internet data centres and 4000 business customers.

Exodus will issue a number of common equivalent shares equal to $6.525 billion, divided by the average closing price of Exodus stock prior to the closing of the transaction.

More importantly, part of the agreement includes the bulked-up Exodus and Asia Global Crossing forming a joint venture to provide complex Web-hosting and managed services in the Asia region. Two-thirds of the joint venture will be owned by Exodus, with Asia Global Crossing holding the remaining third.

CWO shows off B2B

Cable and Wireless Optus (CWO) have launched an online business-to-business (B2B) live auction service and have sampled it for potential customers by making the first purchase.

The telecommunications giant put in an order for $300,000 worth of stationery and watched the bids come in. The successful bidder was National 1, an Australiawide office products supplier.

CWO claims it saved 13 per cent on the purchase price by using the B2B auction for the procurement. It is now trying to market the procurement solution to other businesses on a per-use basis.

The auction solution, called net Auctions, is a browser-based solution based on the Commerce One platform that CWO will on-sell to its business customers.

Vignette targets ASPs

Vignette, the e-business vendor responsible for providing the platform used by i7 and the AOC for the www.olympics.com.au site, has begun offering this same platform to application service providers (ASPs) in the US.

Vignette has signed agreements with eight ASPs including Accumedia, Agiliti, Breakaway, Center 7, Home Page.com, Interpath, Mediablox, RR Donnelly and Surebridge. These ASPs will offer the Vignette V/5 E-business application to small-to-medium sized companies in the US, opening up new revenue opportunities for the vendor.

This platform has been shown to be capable of running high-volume sites, such as the previously mentioned Olympics site which, according to Web-intelligence firm Hitwise, was the second most popular sports site in Australia over the Olympics period.
