Siemens scores Australian Defence Force dealThe services arm of German IT conglomerate Siemens Business Services has muscled-in on a $9.5 million contract with the Australian Defence Force.
Siemens will build the technology component for a new Defense Service Centre in the NSW Snowy Mountains town of Cooma that will field armed forces employment enquiries and provide a contact point for 17,000 civilian Defence personnel.
Partnering with local service provider Australian Information Processing Centre (AIPC), Siemens will roll out an application based on CRM vendor Applix as well as additional software/ hardware.
New server combines e-mail, phone and faxActive Voice is set to unveil its latest unified messaging server at the Lotusphere Europe 2000 trade show in Germany this week.
According to the company, the server, dubbed Unity Enterprise for Domino, will interface with a company's existing IP-PBX to convert phone and fax messages to standard Lotus Notes and Domino e-mail formats and vice versa. The idea is that employees will be able to check all their "Inbox" messages from a PC, a touch-tone phone or the Internet.
Resellers will have to wait until 2001 before a widespread release is announced.
Cognos posts record second-quarter earningsBusiness intelligence (BI) vendor Cognos had some happy executives last week after the company announced record second quarter results, ending August 31.
Central to Cognos' beefed-up results was a 45 per cent growth in licence revenues. The company brought in $US118.2 million for the quarter, up 34 per cent on the same period last year. Contributing to the company's success in the Asia-Pacific region was the signing of St George and Macquarie banks and the Victorian Traffic Accident Commission.
Enterprise sales of its BI product suites also drove up sales, accounting for $106.8 million, an increase of 44 per cent from the same quarter last year.
Maxtor releases new storage device
Maxtor recently announced a compact, rack-mounted storage appliance for use in space-limited corporate networks. The MaxAttach NAS 4000 is a 1U, or 1 7/8-inch-high device with a storage capacity of 340GB. Users on Windows, Linux and Unix workstations can access data stored on the MaxAttach.
