HP To Focus On Service Provider Businesses

BANGKOK (04/10/2000) - As if to strengthen its new "HP Invent" logo, Hewlett-Packard Co. has unveiled more initiatives which will see the company get further involved in the service provider business space, positioning itself as a strategic partner to the emerging business segment.

"HP wants to be a complete IT infrastructure provider for e-commerce by being a strategic business partner. Service provider business is big and various -- with its role extending further than just to Internet service providers (ISPs) and Applications Service Providers (ASP). Business-to-business e-commerce companies will be the main target," said Nelson Tsang, country manager, enterprise computing sales organization at HP (Thailand) Ltd.

"HP plans to leverage its market position to drive the adoption of next generation appliances, e-service and infrastructure. Service providers are part of the emerging market with next generation portals coming along. This will become the Internet chapter two, more wireless e-services that work for customers," he said.

Tsang added that telecommunications companies would play a bigger role in this area. HP's vision for e-commerce is Internet chapter two which will see the Internet working for users, rather than users working the Web. Today, more and more major IT companies are providing solutions for the e-commerce space. IBM has a solution called "e-business", HP has its e-services, while Compaq has come out with its NonStop Business.

According to HP executives, the company's new logo is another move to present itself as the one company that can offer the total e-business solution, following last year's internal restructuring. The new HP organization, which focuses on computing and imaging products, has an opportunity to reinvigorate the brand name, defining a vision that has captured the imagination of customers, employees and shareowners alike. A US$200 million worldwide marketing campaign should help spread the word much faster.

"HP's global vision is a four-fold plan that encapsulates 1) a spirit of invention in all that we do; 2) to be a company that makes the Internet work for customers; 3) to focus aggressively on growth and profitability for customers; and 4) to provide the best total customer experience."
