Compaq executive shake-ups continue

Executive realignment is continuing Compaq with the announcement that Michael Capellas will assume the newly created position of acting chief operating officer.

Capellas, previously CIO at Compaq, joined the company in August last year after a stint as senior vice president and general manager of Oracle's global energy business. Fred Jones, vice president of information services, has been named Compaq's acting CIO.

Compaq also announced that John T. Rose has resigned his position as senior vice president of Compaq's enterprise computing group. Enrico Pesatori will replace Rose as well as continue in his role as acting senior vice president of marketing.

This latest executive departure comes just seven weeks after the ousters of CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer and Chief Financial Officer Earl Mason. In May, Compaq's senior vice president and general manager of worldwide sales and marketing, Michael Heil, resigned to become CEO of CommcoTec, a communications company.

Rose's resignation is "no big surprise," said Terry Shannon, editor of "Shannon Knows Compaq," a specilaist newsletter. "In light of the company's present financial unpleasantness, there will likely be more such sacrifices."

At least four more middle-level executives are scheduled to quit Compaq by June 11, the first anniversary of Compaq's acquisition of Digital Equipment according to Shannon. "The turmoil isn't over yet at Compaq," he said. "They have a lot of work to do before they set their house in order."
