Citrix Announces VPN, Web Application Software

Targeting application service providers (ASPs) and corporate administrators, Citrix Systems announced Tuesday the availability of a new virtual private network (VPN) application and enhancements to application server and portal products.

The Fort Lauderdale-based company's new VPN product, Citrix Extranet, provides security when deploying applications via the Internet, the company said in a statement. Citrix Extranet is designed to provide authentication, access controls and encryption. It works on Microsoft's Windows NT, Windows 95, 98, 2000, CE, as well as Macintosh, Linux and Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Solaris operating systems.

Licensing for Citrix Extranet is based on a named user model, according to the company's Web site. The suggested retail price is $US119 per named user with Citrix's Subscription Advantage program, or $99 per named user without Subscription Advantage. The product is sold as a Server plus 15 user licenses (required for server installations), with additional increments of five, 10, 20 and 50 user license packs.

In addition to its new VPN offering, the company also announced Citrix MetaFrame 1.8, Feature Release 1 -- known as MetaFrame FR1 -- and Citrix NFuse 1.5. MetaFrame uses the Citrix Independent Computing Architecture protocol to display Windows 2000 and NT server applications on a mix of remote clients. NFuse allows users to activate applications through a Web browser.

Citrix MetaFrame FR1 will be available free for current Citrix MetaFrame 1.8 customers with Subscription Advantage, according to the company's Web site. For Citrix MetaFrame 1.8 customers the suggested retail pricing is US1,995 with Subscription Advantage and US1,295 without it.

Citrix said Citrix NFuse 1.5 allows users to integrate applications for portals, provides the ability to customize the browser and content around the applications, and gives ASPs and enterprise administrators the ability to control applications through centralized deployment.

Citrix NFuse 1.5 is available as a free download from the Citrix Web site for customers of Citrix MetaFrame FR1 or Citrix MetaFrame 1.1 for Unix.

The new products will be featured Oct. 2 through Oct. 5 at Citrix iForum 2000 in Orlando, Florida.
