Lycos Switches to Microsoft-Intel

REDMOND, WASHINGTON (07/27/2000) - The Lycos Network, an Internet hub that claims more than 32 million users, this week converted to a Microsoft-Intel configuration for its primary platform, executives from Lycos Inc. and Microsoft Corp. announced Thursday.

"The Microsoft and Intel platform was the only platform, we thought, that supported everything we wanted to do," Lycos CIO Tim Wright said at Microsoft's financial analysts conference.

Wright said the Wintel platform's reliability and scalability were key factors in the move. This week, he said, one dual-processor Intel Corp. machine running Windows 2000 handled 1 million page hits per day with no interruptions.

"In terms of cost per page view, that is significantly better than any of the other platforms we evaluated," Wright said.

Microsoft trumpeted the customer win as proof that, in the words of Chris Atkinson, vice president of the company's .NET Solutions Group, "Windows runs the Web."

Lycos, based in Waltham, Mass., bills itself as the third largest Internet property. Its Web holdings include Lycos.com, the HotBot search engine, Tripod, Gamesville, HotWired, and Wired News.
