Bus-Tech Rolling Out Linux Controller

FRAMINGHAM (06/30/2000) - Host controller manufacturer Bus-Tech Inc. is branching out from its traditional mainframe access roots.

The firm recently announced it was rolling out a new embedded Linux controller for networking and storage gear makers to use in their products.

Burlington, Massachusetts, Bus-Tech has long been an established player in the data center communications market. Among its offerings is a line of adapters to let mainframes run IP traffic out into LANs. "This product offers us the opportunity to play outside the world of the mainframe," says Jim O'Connor, director of product marketing for Bus-Tech.

The Bus-Tech Linux controller will come in the form of a board or box for OEMs to place in their communications or storage products, Bus-Tech says.

The component will contain a copy of MontaVista's Hard Hat Linux to control its LAN or WAN traffic regulation functions. The Linux controller could be used to handle Web serving, caching, security and other functions in Internet server or appliances, claims Bus-Tech. Pricing will depend on the OEM buyer; the controller will be available in August. www.bustech.com.
