Yahoo Launches India Portal

BOSTON (06/29/2000) - Internet giant Yahoo Inc. Thursday bolstered its presence in Asia by announcing the launch of its India portal, Yahoo India.

Yahoo India is the U.S. company's twenty-third country-specific Web portal, according to a company statement. In March this year, Yahoo launched its twenty-second country-specific Web portal for Argentina.

The Indian site will host an India-specific Web directory and offer a selection of news relevant to Indians, with an emphasis on breaking news, entertainment, cricket, finance and weather. Also on offer from Yahoo will be free e-mail, Web pages, instant messaging and personalization tools, the company said.

India currently has around 1.6 million Internet users, according to figures quoted by Yahoo from market research company International Data Corp. (IDC).

IDC is owned by International Data Group Inc., the parent company of IDG News Service. IDC expects the number of Indian Net users to grow to 11 million by 2003. These statistics have led Yahoo to declare India a "rapidly growing Internet market," according to Thursday's company statement.

India is home to more than 1 billion people, who speak 15 official languages and more than 700 dialects, according to the Indian Census Bureau. At the moment, however, Yahoo India's interface is available only in one language -- English.

Yahoo India can be reached at http://www.yahoo.co.in/. Yahoo, based in Santa Clara, California, can be reached at +1-408-731-3300 or on the Web at http://www.yahoo.com/.
