Market Movers: The Yo-Yo Falls Again

SAN FRANCISCO (06/15/2000) - The yo-yo Nasdaq slipped again today, weighed down by losses in technology. The index lost 53.65, or 1.4 percent, to close at 3797.41. The Dow meanwhile held steady, posting a small 0.62 percent gain. It rose 66.11 to close at 10687.95.

Large-cap tech stocks were down, with the biggest losses in Hewlett-Packard (HWP) , Lucent, Oracle (ORCL) and Intel Corp. (INTC) . Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) enjoyed gains, however, on news that it would be given an opportunity to file objections to a breakup plan before the company's antitrust case goes to the Supreme Court. The stock rose $2.62, or nearly 4 percent, to $70.50.

A big tech gainer today was TiVo (TIVO) , which soared 56 percent on news of its deal with AOL. TiVo will offer AOLTV subscribers the ability to create their own television schedules. TiVo's stock gained $12.23 to close at $33.80.

AOL rose $1.06, or 2 percent, to $52.68.

Vixel (VIXL) , a provider of storage-area networks, jumped 25 percent today on news of a deal with BMC Software (BMCS) . The stock was up $2.18 to $11.06.

Among the biggest tech losers today was software maker Micros Systems. The stock plunged 28 percent on news of disappointing fourth-quarter earnings. It was down $7.18 to close at $18.43.

Performance in the Dow was mixed today, though financial stocks were up across the board.
