IBM Pushing Business Components

BOSTON (06/07/2000) - Tired of writing all your business applications by hand? Try doing it prefab.

Looking to help enterprise users speed up the time it takes to get their e-business applications up and running, IBM Corp. yesterday announced its WebSphere Business Components initiative.

The announcement, made at the JavaOne conference, includes the rollout of new developer tools as well as Enterprise Java Beans that can be strung together quickly to create complex business rules. IBM says the components will be able to handle a variety of business specific functions for industries like insurance and banking. There also will be more general components to create cross industry supply chain and customer relationship management code.

IBM believes it is crucial to attract independent software vendors as well in house corporate developers to its Java and middleware technologies. The company claims that by 2003, 70 percent of all new applications will be built with pre-existing components.

As part of the components initiative, IBM will draw from a number of independent pieces of software, such as the San Francisco business logic framework.

Other WebSphere components will be available from the IBM AlphaWorks developers' code site. Included will be software that handles things such as mathematical operations and managing exchanges rates. There will also be a "Components Zone" on the IBM DeveloperWorks site, which offers tutorials, tips and news for developers.

Some WebSphere code has been posted on the AlphaWorks and DeveloperWorks sites.www.alphaWorks.ibm.com.
