TOKYO (01/26/2000) - Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corp. has licensed from ARM Ltd. the company's ARM7TDMI-S RISC (reduced instruction set computer) microprocessor core for use in future digital consumer electronics chips, U.K.-based ARM said yesterday.
The microprocessor core will be used in system LSI (large scale integrated) chips -- devices custom-designed for a single application that integrate most of the components needed on a single chip. Mitsubishi Electric expects to have the first devices featuring the microprocessor core available in 2001.
The news comes a year after ARM announced a licensing deal for the same core with Japan's Toshiba Corp. The core is being widely used by manufacturers in wireless and multimedia applications, and other licensees include 3Com Corp., LSI Logic Corp., Qualcomm Inc., Atmel Corp., Seiko Epson Corp., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. and IBM Corp.
