FRAMINGHAM (01/26/2000) - Under a settlement reached yesterday with the New York State attorney general's office, The Chase Manhattan Bank has agreed to stop sharing detailed financial information about its credit-card customers with telemarketing companies without first notifying its customers.
As part of its settlement agreement, Chase did not admit to any wrongdoing.
In a separate settlement, Sony Corp. subsidiary InfoBeat, a Denver-based Internet firm, also agreed to stop sharing the personal information of its subscribers with third-party companies.
According to a press release issued yesterday by Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, InfoBeat claimed a programming error provided certain advertisers access to subscribers' e-mail addresses. The company said the problem has since been fixed.
