Universities all for One

Macquarie University's 18-month search for a new administration system was finalised this week after it chose Technology One's Student One software.

The multimillion-dollar contract will see Student One replace the Sydney-based university's aging in-house system which was developed more than 30 years ago.

Macquarie's registrar and vice principal, Brian Spencer, said the system had to support Macquarie's strategic direction of utilising high technology to support innovation and excellence in research, teaching, and flexible delivery. "Macquarie is known as an IT-capable and innovative university. We wanted to be able to offer students and staff an innovative student system."

Spencer said the decision to choose Student One over four other products was based on a wide range of criteria, including business processes, fitting to Macquarie's needs, cost, risks and reference checks.

"It was very important to us when Student One recently went live at Curtin University. We sent a team over a week before it went live to watch it closely. It has given us confidence to have seen the product proven in operation."

Student One has since gone live at Bond University, while Flinders University in Adelaide, Southern Cross University at Lismore and Avondale University outside Newcastle are due to go live this year.

Technology One's managing director, Adrian Di Marco, said Macquarie University was a strategically important contract to win in the university sector. "It consolidates our position as a leading supplier to this exciting sector and continues to demonstrate that universities do not need to tolerate the high implementation costs and extended project timeframes typified by other suppliers."

The implementation of Student One at Macquarie will start this month, and is scheduled to go live in mid 2001.
