Akamai Boosts European Presence

Akamai Technologies Inc., a provider of server software for speeding up Internet traffic, today announced the appointment of Wolfgang Sthle as the new president of its European operations.

Sthle, the former general manager of BBN Europe, will lead Akamai Europe from its new headquarters in Munich, Germany, the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company said in a statement.

Akamai said the appointment of Sthle and the establishment of its new European headquarters were timed to meet the high growth expectations for advanced Web services in Europe over the next few years. The company also has subsidiaries in London and Paris.

Akamai already has deployed its servers in 17 European countries, spanning the networks of 27 different telecommunications operators, the company said.

Following its recently announced partnership with Swedish carrier Telia AB, Akamai's network now spans all of Europe's major backbone of provider networks, the company said.

Separately, Akamai today also announced that NBC Internet Inc. (NBCi) has signed up to use its FreeFlow service to enhance performance at its Web sites.

The first NBCi Web unit to use the FreeFlow service will be the media company's flagship Snap portal site, Akamai said in a statement.

Akamai, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, can be reached via the Web at http://www.akamai.com.
