Goldman Sachs, Kyocera on HDR Wireless Data

Hitachi Ltd. will jointly develop equipment and participate in a field trial of Qualcomm Inc.'s High Data Rate (HDR) technology, a high-speed wireless data service based on Qualcomm's CDMA (code division multiple access) technology, Hitachi said today.

Technical trials of HDR are scheduled to begin in mid-2000, and Hitachi will take part in the trials, according to terms of the letter of intent signed by the two companies. Hitachi said it plans to develop and manufacture HDR infrastructure equipment for commercial use once the trials are completed.

Provided the trials are successful, first commercial rollout of the system is likely in 2001.

HDR offers packet data transmission speeds as high as 2.4G bits per second, according to Qualcomm, and can be deployed on three generations of CDMA networks -- first-generation IS95A, current generation IS95B and yet-to-be-launched cdma2000 networks.

Hitachi already produces CDMA cellular handsets but has not worked in the carrier-equipment side of the business. A spokesman for the Tokyo-based company said its experience in the field of computer networking and particularly Internet Protocol (IP) technologies would be used to design access points, routers and servers for the HDR trials. HDR has an IP-based architecture.
