HONG KONG (01/04/2000) - The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) yesterday named David Farber, currently a telecommunications professor at the University of Pennsylvania, as its chief technologist.
Farber will replace Stagg Newman, who will step down on Jan. 14. According to an FCC statement, Newman is moving to North Carolina for family reasons and will become Senior Telecommunications Practice Expert at consulting company McKinsey and Co.
In a statement, FCC Chairman William Kennard welcomed Farber's expertise as the FCC grapples in the coming years with implementation of broadband services.
Farber heads the Center for Communications & Information Science & Policy and the Laboratory for Distributed Systems at Penn. He directs research in ultra-high speed networking, computer architecture design and distributed collaboration methodology.
He previously has worked at Scientific Data Systems, the Rand Corp. and Bell Labs, and has taught at the University of Delaware and the University of California at Irvine.
