Communications Glitch Freezes Nasdaq Index

FRAMINGHAM (02/22/2000) - The Nasdaq Stock Exchange Inc. was unable to update quotes to its Nasdaq Composite Index for 2.5 hours Friday afternoon after the all-electronic market experienced a glitch with a communications feed to one of its mainframe computers.

The problem didn't affect the Unisys Corp. mainframe computer itself that's used to update the index at Nasdaq's Trumbull, Conn., data center, according to a spokesman for the exchange. However, data that had queued up in the line prevented the mainframe from updating the index in real-time until after 2 p.m., the spokesman said.

The composite index froze at 11:25 a.m. Friday and was fixed shortly after 1 p.m.

Trading during the snafu continued unabated, the spokesman added.
