China.com Posts Big Revenue Gain for Year

HONG KONG (02/15/2000) - Internet portal provider Chinadotcom Corp. today reported its revenue more than doubled in the last quarter of 1999 from the previous quarter.

Total revenue for the quarter ended Dec. 31, 1999 was US$10.8 million, up 105 percent from third-quarter revenue of $5.2 million.

For the full year 1999, the company posted a net loss of $18.7 million on revenue of $20.1 million, which showed a 483 percent rise in revenue from the previous year. Excluding non-cash components, such as goodwill and stock compensation expenses, its net loss was $7 million.

Chinadotcom operates several Web portals across Greater China, including hongkong.com, taiwan.com, cww.com, and the Mainland China portal, china.com.

Its aim is to provide a full range of Internet services across Asia, including building e-commerce solutions and selling online advertising.

The company said its average daily page views for the quarter were 4.2 million, up 68 percent from the previous period. Membership grew from approximately 750,000 users on Sept. 30 to approximately 2.2 million by Dec. 31.

Chinadotcom is among the most aggressive companies pursuing a common goal of serving the fast-growing Asian Internet market and aiming particularly at mainland China. The company has made a series of investments and partnerships in the region, and last week took a 17 percent stake in FinanceAsia, a financial publisher based in Hong Kong.
