UUNET Gets a New Chief

FRAMINGHAM (06/23/2000) - Earlier this week Robert Hartnett was quietly named UUNET Technologies Inc.'s new president and CEO.

Hartnett is replacing Mark Spagnolo, who is said to be moving to a new position within WorldCom. Spagnolo is working with WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers on "new projects," according to a UUNET spokesperson. There are no additional details about his new position available from the company at this time.

Spagnolo joined UUNET in 1997 as the ISP's president. Spagnolo and was named CEO in late 1998 when John Sidgmore, vice chairman at WorldCom, handed over reins.

Hartnett is an MCI veteran who joined WorldCom Inc. in 1998 after WorldCom acquired MCI Corp. Hartnett is also president and CEO of global accounts at WorldCom and will retain both titles in the future. Hartnett has been with MCI and WorldCom a total of 18 years, primarily in executive sales positions.

The company gave no indication why it made an executive shift at this time.
