JEIDA: Japan 1999 PC Shipments Hit 9.2 Million

TOKYO (02/08/2000) - Shipments of personal computers in Japan in 1999 rose 31 percent to hit a record 9.2 million units, the Japan Electronics Industries Development Association (JEIDA) announced today.

The Japanese market for PCs and related products was worth 237.4 billion yen (US$2.2 billion) in 1999, an increase of 23 percent over 1998, JEIDA said in a statement. Of the entire market, the value of PC shipments totaled 189.8 billion yen, up 21 percent, while the computer peripherals market was worth 47.6 billion yen, up 27 percent on the year.

The results top a strong year in which shipments in each quarter exceeded 2 million for the first time ever, according to JEIDA estimates. Shipments by quarter were 2.4 million, 2.0 million, 2.4 million and 2.4 million, respectively.

According to JEIDA, the desktop and notebook PC markets showed equally strong year-on-year growth. Unit shipments of desktop computers and servers climbed 32 percent to 4.9 million units, while those of notebooks were up 31 percent to 4.3 million units.

Within the desktop segment, shipments of packaged PCs, including a monitor, keyboard and mouse, were up 44 percent to 3.1 million units. In the notebook market, shipments of sub-notebooks declined 5 percent to 668,000 units, JEIDA said.

The peripherals market saw a strong increase in printer shipments, which rose 44 percent to 3.9 million units.

Ltd., Sanyo Electric Co. Ltd., Sharp Corp., Seiko Epson Corp., Sony Corp., Toshiba Corp., IBM Japan Corp., Gateway Japan Inc., Hitachi Ltd., PFU Ltd., Fujitsu Ltd., Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. and Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
