HK vendor brings WAP proxy software to Asia

Ariel Communications this week introduced the Asian market to proxy software that allows corporations to host their own applications for WAP (wireless application protocol) handheld devices.

The software, a Windows application called WAPLite that was developed by US-based Infinite Technologies acts as a gateway between a corporate intranet and an outside service provider's wireless network. WAPLite converts business applications written in WML (wireless markup language) into the compressed format required on WAP devices, according to an Ariel statement.

WAPLite lets employees work with sensitive corporate data on their WAP devices without the data traversing a service provider's WAP gateway, and allows companies to begin using WAP-compliant applications even if their current service provider is not equipped to host applications in that format, Ariel said.

Installed on a remote access server, WAPLite could provide a fully corporate-operated solution for roving employees to access commonly used applications on the go, according to Ariel.

WAP-enabled mobile phones have received a rousing welcome in some Asian markets, including Hong Kong and Japan. A number of service providers and portal operators are offering or plan to offer consumer-oriented information for WAP, and WAP-based stock trading is soon to be introduced in Hong Kong.

WAPLite was introduced in the US market last November. Ariel represents Infinite in several Asian countries.

During WAPLite's launch period, ending on February 29, a two-user licence can be purchased for $HK3200 ($A630). A free 30-day evaluation copy is also available.
