Compaq Announces Notebook PC Below US$1,200

BOSTON (03/20/2000) - Compaq Computer Corp. announced today a new notebook computer priced at US$1,099.

For that price, the Notebook 100 offers a 475MHz Advanced Micro Devices Inc.

(AMD) processor, choice of a 12.1-inch SVGA (SuperVGA) HPA (high performance addressing) or TFT (thin film transistor) display, 4M bytes or 8M bytes of SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory), a 5G-byte hard drive, a CD-ROM and a 56K-bps (bits per second) modem. An upgrade to 64M bytes of SDRAM and a 12.1-inch TFT active-matrix display costs $1,499, Compaq said today in a statement announcing the new notebook.

The notebook is available either directly from Compaq or through resellers in North America, Latin America, China, Europe and the Middle East, Compaq said.

The notebook comes with Microsoft Corp.'s Windows 98 SE operating system, a choice of MS Office applications, Symantec Corp.'s Norton AntiVirus, WinFax Basic fax software and Adobe Systems Inc.'s Acrobat Reader. The device is aimed at small and medium-sized business users and the education and government markets.
