NEC Unveils Eight-Way Servers

FRAMINGHAM (04/26/2000) - With fast-growing e-commerce infrastructures in mind, NEC Corp. yesterday debuted an eight-way-capable Pentium III Xeon server aimed at enterprise users. The NEC Express5800/180Ra-7 server lets end users start off with as little as a single processor and expand to eight processors.

The Express5800/180Ra-7 comes in a compact tower or rack configuration. The rack configuration is 12.25 inches high. With space constraints often encountered in service providers, or where an end user is contracting with one, the server includes an integrated high-speed, low-profile CD-ROM drive, 10 hot-plug PCI slots, two hot-swap dual hard disk drives and up to 16G bytes of error-correcting SDRAM.

NEC claims the server scored the highest TPC-H benchmark performance among four-processor servers. Tested using a 100G-byte database, it ran 800 Queries per hour and rated $267/queries per hour in price/performance tests.

That score was 20 percent better than the second-place four-way system in the test.

The Express5800 server features the ESMPRO Management Suite with integrated Management Workstation Application, which enables system network administrators to control, monitor and manage client/server information and operation throughout a LAN or WAN.

Key features include:

Support for one to eight 550-MHz Pentium III XEON processors.

Upgradeability to next-generation Pentium III XEON processors when available.

1M-byte or 2M-byte L2 cache.

128M-byte L3 cache (eight-way).

Up to 16G bytes memory.

10 PCI I/O expansion slots.

Disk Expansion Unit for disk expansion up to 288G bytes per unit.

Hot-plug PCI expansion slots.

Hot-swap drives.

Redundant hot-swap cooling fans and power supplies.

Certified to run Microsoft's Windows NT Server, Windows 2000, SCO.

The NEC Express5800/180Ra-7 server will be available in May. A basic configuration will start at $12,500.
