FRAMINGHAM (04/24/2000) - FedEx Ground Inc., a $1.9 billion subsidiary of Federal Express Corp. that delivers small packages to businesses via ground shipments, today named Michael V. Hmel as its CIO.

Hmel, former vice president of information technology at FedEx Ground, is responsible for coordinating all IT services at the Pittsburgh-based unit.

FedEx Ground, which was called RPS Inc. until it was renamed in January, accounted for 11% of $17 billion in total revenue that was reported last year by FedEx in Memphis.

Hmel was also promoted to senior vice president of information systems at the ground unit, where he has held various management positions in the IT department since 1994. He was previously vice president of information systems at medical insurer Blue Cross of Western Pennsylvania.

"Mike offers extensive knowledge and technical savvy that keeps our company at the forefront of our industry," Daniel J. Sullivan, president and CEO of FedEx Ground, said in a statement. "In addition, he has an exceptional leadership style that helps him attract and retain the most skilled professionals in what is probably the most comprehensive employment market today."
