Securant Strengthens Web-Based Access Control

FRAMINGHAM (04/17/2000) - Securant Technologies has just started shipping a new version of its ClearTrust SecureControl software for Web-based access control, adding a "threat-detection" feature that notifies managers when suspicious or unusual behavior is detected.

Unix-based ClearTrust SecureControl 4.0 is designed as a proxy server used to restrict access to any Web application, whether it is running on Unix, Windows NT/2000, MVS, AS/400 or any of a variety of application servers. The latest version of the access-control software lets managers delegate administration within the corporate intranet, outside the enterprise or to individual subscribers.

"For management, you also can delegate between departments into what we call 'virtual business units,'" says Eric Olden, chief technology officer at Securant, who emphasizes that ClearTrust SecureControl is intended primarily for use in business-to-business applications. Thomson Financial, Chase Hambrecht & Quist and Merrill Lynch are among the corporations using the Web-access control software, according to Olden.

The threat-detection capability added to ClearTrust SecureControl 4.0 lets network managers monitor how users are accessing Web information.

"If there are incorrect authentication entries, or other patterns of suspicious behavior, such as someone trying to make a funds transfer when they have no authority, SecureControl can suspends the account or e-mail or page the administrator," Olden explained. "It's rules-based, and it also lets you build an automated customer-response."

ClearTrust SecureControl 4.0 is priced at US$20 per user, although volume pricing can be lower, Olden indicated.
