BMC Leaps into SAN Storm

FRAMINGHAM (04/19/2000) - Network monitoring and management software vendor BMC is rolling out a line of products and services for SANs.

On Monday, the company announced its flagship Patrol product would start letting users manage and monitor storage-area networks. BMC also will offer SAN consulting and implementation services to its customers.

On the product side, BMC is shipping a new module, called Patrol for Storage Management, which gives IT staff a single view of SAN devices. The first component will be able to handle EMC's Symmetrix line of storage hardware. BMC claims Patrol will notify IT staff if performance levels on an EMC device drop, or if its disk space starts to run out.

BMC says it also plans to extend Patrol support to other vendors' hardware.

Among them will be IBM's Enterprise Storage Server, known as "Shark"; Compaq's StorageWorks; and others. Pricing was not disclosed.

Later this year, BMC is also planning to offer a SAN manager that will give users a central access point to heterogeneous SAN hardware platforms. The manager will be able to automatically discover all devices on a SAN and create a map of the SAN topology. The cost of the SAN manager will be an estimated $5,000.www.bmc.com
