EMC has developed a wide range of disaster recovery and business continuity solutions to handle both disasters and planned outages.
The Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF), run in conjunction with EMC's Symmetric Enterprise Storage System, is a complete business continuation solution for enterprise systems.
Providing 24x7 support, the solution is designed to protect systems and applications in a data centre following a disaster or a planned event such as scheduled maintenance, daily backups, system migrations or application testing.
Providing protection for mainframe, Unix, Windows NT and AS/400 systems, the SRDF creates real-time, host-independent, mirrored volumes of production information at a separate location.
Data and applications are automatically replicated between geographically separated EMC Symmetrix Enterprise Storage Systems over Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
The SRDF copies all user-specified data from the source to the target Symmetrix, enabling staff to switch from the source to the target quickly if necessaryIn the event of an outage, the SRDF enables fast switch-over to duplicate data located at the separate site. This enables systems to be up and running within minutes.
A single SRDF-configured Symmetrix can support up to four local or remote Symmetrix systems.

Tivoli
In July this year, IBM-owned storage specialist Tivoli released a disaster recovery solution to enhance its popular Tivoli Storage Manager solution.
Designed for the enterprise market, the Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager is a completely separate product, which requires Storage Manager as a prerequisite and enhances many disaster recovery features already available with the storage product.
The Storage Manager, which Meta Group ranks number-one in storage management, already provides some disaster recovery features, including centralised storage management, SAN features, high-speed policy-based disaster recovery and data protection for e-mail, databases, groupware and applications.
The Disaster Recovery Manager helps with the automated generation of a customised server disaster recovery plan. It also provides off-site recovery media management and centralised management of a complete disaster recovery process.
Other features of the Disaster Recovery Manager include:
- the ability to generate an inventory of machine information required to recover the server and clients in the event of a disaster; and - executable scripts that help in the automation of recovery and electronic vaulting of storage pool and database back-ups to another Tivoli Storage Manager server.
The Disaster Recovery Manager is available for Unix, Windows NT, OS/390, MVS and AS/400 server systems.

Computer Associates
Computer Associates provides a wide range of data storage products, including a number of solutions that are specifically targeted at e-business servers and suitable for disaster recovery.
The ARCserve 2000 Workgroup family of products provides a number of options for protecting IT environments and critical data, including a disaster recovery option, backup agent, tape library and various storage area network products.
Combined with ARCserve 2000, the ARCserve 2000 Disaster Recovery Option provides a disaster recovery solution for Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments.
The ARCserve 2999 delivers serverless back-up for SANs without the need for reinstalling the operating systems or having an impact on the e-business server. Together with the disaster recovery solution, companies can achieve quick and easy restoration of servers.
With the Disaster Recovery Option, users can also save the boot disk information on a set of floppy disks or have the ARCserve 2000 collect the updated information automatically.
If a disaster or outage occurs, an enterprise's entire system can be rebuilt without having to reinstall the operating system.
Other features of the disaster recovery option include providing active clustering support that ensures data protection operations can continue if a disaster occurs or server fails.

Hitachi Data Systems
Hitachi Data Systems has a number of enterprise storage systems designed to help IT managers provide disaster recovery and unlimited data access.
The Freedom Storage Lightning 9900 is the first product in a new family of storage systems aimed at the Internet industry.
Based on internal, switched fabric architecture known as Hi-Star Architecture, the product is aimed at e-business environments and provides a scalable, resilient, high-performance framework to assist with strategic business initiatives.
Features of the product include instant 24 hour access, including no single point of failure, and fault-tolerant 24x7 availability; connectivity and resource sharing; and compatibility with Unix, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Novell, Netware, Linux and OS/390.
Additional solutions with the Lighting 9900 include:
- Hitachi Storage Maximiser for automating storage performance requirements; - Rapid Recovery for Open Systems, integrating NanoCopy capability into Hitachi Asynchronous Remote Copy (HARC) for recovery of data; - Open SAN for Freedom Networks;- application testing and data mining applications; and non-disruptive back-up-to-tape functionality for Oracle databases.
The Lightning 9990 Model 9960 is available with 18Gb and 47Gb disk drives. The 73Gb drives will be available in Q4.
