Centricity Helps Set App Delivery Policies

SAN MATEO (04/03/2000) - Centricity Inc., a startup launching next week, is targeting the control and delivery of "personal application services" across the Internet as its answer to managing expanding custom-based infrastructure policies.

The software vendor has developed an architecture that adds a service layer between applications and the network. The layer offers information about the applications, networks, and users to enable easy policy definition and management, said Lynn Nye, Centricity's president and founder. Nye said the company is focused on service providers and business-to-business enterprises.

Defining policies that are implemented and handled closer to where the services are delivered makes sense, said Rich Ptak, senior vice president of Systems and Application Management at Hurwitz Group, a consultancy in Framingham, Massachusetts.

"It's basically middleware management," Ptak said. "It addresses the problem of resource performance management through automatic application policies."

The Centricity architecture uses agents that reside on the networked appliance and centralized "Control Points" that coordinate system resources and resolve issues by balancing user requirements with business policy, network capacity, and application priority.

Centricity is slated to introduce its product line and pricing in June, Nye said.
