BOSTON (05/31/2000) - NetSpeak next week at SuperComm will unveil software that lets service providers offer more phone system features over public IP networks.
The new features include four-digit dialing between different companies as well as voice quality-of-service (QoS) levels that let service providers offer a lower grade of voice at a discount.
The company says its new NetSpeak voice services software is more attractive to carriers in two ways. First it offers more features service providers can sell to customers. Second, it lets carriers scale their networks to accommodate increasing demand.
NetSpeak software already supports four- or five-digit dialing to other extensions on a single customer's IP-voice VPN. The new features enable the same kind of dialing to connect to extensions in other business' networks, the company says. NetSpeak server software keeps track of the extension numbering schemes at the partner sites and makes translations as necessary.
The software also now supports QoS, which lets carriers offer services with varying levels of voice quality. A lower quality could be used between corporate extensions where it is not as important to have top-quality voice.
The highest quality could be used for conversations with other businesses where it is important to make a good impression.
Customers who buy multiple grades of voice service would signal the network by punching a single digit on their phone. This tells the network which QoS they want to use.
The new software is compatible with hardware made by Cisco Systems Inc. and Motorola Inc.
