ATL Shows Off IP Backup for Storage Appliances

LAS VEGAS (05/12/2000) - Furthering the convergence between LANs and SANs, Quantum ATL is expected to announce this August the first Gigabit Ethernet tape library that can back up network-attached storage appliances.

The ATL Products Inc. P3000 FNS for NetApp tape library was demoed at NetWork+Interop 2000 this week. It is capable of backing up multiple Network Appliance file servers. It uses LAN-free back-up technology to free the LAN of back-up data and reduces the amount of time set aside for backup. In a typical ATL/NetApps configuration a Gigabit Ethernet switch joins several NetApp filers to the tape library. The P3000 at present has user-installable Fibre Channel adapters for backing up data over a storage-area network.

The P3000 works with back-up software from Legato, Veritas or other Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP)-compatible back-up products. The NDMP is an open standard for backing up network-attached storage.

The ATL P3000 tape library features redundant and hot-swappable AC power supplies, fans as well as hot-swappable tape drives. Up to 18 Digital Linear Tape (DLT) drives holding 326 tape cartridges can be configured in a single library. The P3000 can back up to 288G-bytes of data per hour and has a maximum capacity of 11.4 terabytes.

The tape library will ship with browser-like software dubbed WebAdmin, which allows remote management of the device.

The P3000 FNS for NetApp tape library with Gigabit Ethernet support will be available in August. Prices have not been determined.
