SAN MATEO (05/08/2000) - Making use of the end-to-end reporting capabilities of a company's enterprise is becoming much more of a critical factor for network management during these days of the booming e-business age.
At NetWorld+Interop in Las Vegas this week, network administrators and CIOs can expect to see the software and hardware aspects of the subject addressed behind a host of products designed to make clear and quick sense of data being fed into and emerging from a Web-enabled infrastructure.
Tivoli Systems Inc. will use the event to showcase Tivoli NetView 6.0, which features a new Java-based Web client console. Tivoli NetView is capable of sorting through large amounts of data in a short time from anywhere on the network, officials said. The product's new Router Fault Isolation capability narrows out the defective hardware without a smattering of low-priority error messages from other parts of the system.
Network administrators are starting to prefer products that give them the ability to manage beyond the level of device availability to develop a management scheme based on the entire system, said Richard Ptak, vice president of systems management research at Hurwitz Group, in Framingham, Massachusetts.
Of course, scalability is a big part of that, and NetView's 6.0 seeks to deliver with a console enabling 10 times as many operators as had the previous version to access a single Tivoli NetView server.
The product is available now and pricing is based on network size and complexity.
Aprisma Management Technologies, a Cabletron spin-off, is using this week's release of its Spectrum 6.0 product as a foundation for its Prism technology, which integrates systems and network management into a single view of an e-business environment.
Spectrum 6.0 uses notification features to connect legacy network management platforms and technology point offerings to provide real-time visibility of end-to-end infrastructure outages. The product can identify and resolve service outages before degradation occurs, translating the information into relevant business data.
Spectrum 6.0 will be available in 60 days with pricing starting at $40,000.
Also at the show, Sitara Networks Inc. will unveil a new version of its quality of service software, QoSWorks 1.5. QoSWorks is designed to provide more control over Internet traffic to improve the performance of applications running via a WAN (wide area network). The software manages all applications of a given network at once.
The new version of QoSWorks will include an interface that allows network managers to set policies on a single screen and will allow ebusinesses to launch browser-based applications, e-commerce, voice, and video on the same network. Prices start at $2,500 per unit.
