Compaq Ships Sub-$1000 Notebook

SAN FRANCISCO (05/19/2000) - Compaq Computer Corp. has broken the $1000 barrier for notebook computers with the release yesterday of a $999 Presario 1200 XL-450.

The new entry-level unit of the Presario 1200 series is powered by a 450-MHz AMD K6-2 processor. The 1200-XL 450 unit is equipped with 32MB of memory, a 5.9GB hard drive, and a 24X CD-ROM drive.

The unit has a 12.1-inch LCD that Compaq describes as a High Performance Addressing display. It uses a passive-matrix technology that is less expensive and typically not as sharp as the common active-matrix, thin-film-transistor displays.

The notebook comes loaded with Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, as well as Works 2000, Money 2000, Word 2000, and Encarta 2000.

Previously, Compaq's cheapest notebooks were other members of its Presario 1200 family, which are available both preconfigured or in custom setups. A unit with a 475-MHz AMD K6-2, also with 32MB of memory and a 5GB hard drive, is priced at $1099.

Sub-$1000 notebooks are often hard to find and typically are only available from lesser-known vendors. Systems from larger vendors usually only reach the $999 price point with the help of rebates, or at the end of their shelf life.
