CA Readies Distributed Applications Mgmt. Relief

ISLANDIA, N.Y. (05/04/2000) - IS professionals who need to manage distributed enterprise databases and applications might want to consider a new software package from Computer Associates International Inc.

ManageIT lets IS staff manage products including Lotus Notes and Oracle databases from a single console. The software can generate reports on things such as potential failures in these applications and conduct other tasks as well.

ManageIT is based on a suite called ProVision, one of a number of products CA acquired when it purchased Platinum for $3.5 billion last year. The suite will compare with products such as BMC Software's Patrol line of application management tools.

ManageIT is the first Platinum technology to be released that includes features from CA's flagship Unicenter TNG management platform. Among those features is the ability to do root-cause analysis of network problems, says Bob Ahlers, a CA executive. It also can automatically discover databases that are in the network, another standard Unicenter feature.

The software will be able to share information with other management products from CA such as NetworkIT, which monitors and manages network devices. This will give IT staff a more complete picture of the company's health.

The product relies on special "knowledge agents" to gather information about application performance in the network. These agents sit on the database or application servers and use SNMP to detect and report anomalies to the ManageIT server. After collection, the data is turned over to CA's Neugents artificial intelligence software, which runs on any network server and can predict potential failures in these applications before they affect end users, CA says.

"It is difficult at best to proactively monitor dozens of remote servers for all of the different conditions that affect performances and deploy fixes to them all," says one beta user who spoke on condition of anonymity. This user, a database administrator from a large power company running on Sun Solaris, says ManageIT has allowed him to watch his company's databases and head off outages. When a database is in danger of crashing, ManageIT generates pager or e-mail alerts to the company's IS staff, he says.

ManageIT runs on Windows NT and Unix servers, and will start at about $3,000.

Availability will be announced within the next few weeks.
